I know this feature currently doesn’t exist, but from recent experience in a large organization it would be still so desirable – to let users request membership in a given community, instead of the admins sending an invite etc. The latter scales poorly. Is there any chance this can be implemented?

Out of curiosity, are you using InvenioRDM at CERN?
Thank you so much for the reply. My question was actually about Zenodo, I couldn’t find the right forum but assuming that Invenio is the backend I thought there was a good chance that the feature would propagate. So my organization (ePIC) is using Zenodo and will likely be using it steadily. When onboarding multiple users, going through the individual invites becomes a chore and create e-mail traffic, hence we find this new feature highly desirable.

I was guessing that you were referring to Zenodo. However, this is the InvenioRDM forum (the technology behind Zenodo).
Even if a feature is implemented in InvenioRDM, it is not 100% sure that then it will be activated in Zenodo.
I would recommend getting in contact with the Zenodo team.
